CLOUDS

" Clouds are defined as aggregates of innumerable tinny water droplets, ice particles or mixture of both in the air generally much above the ground surface ".
OR
" Clouds are masses of minute water droplets and/or crystals formed by the condensation of water vapour and held in suspension in the atmosphere ".

Types Of Clouds:-

Types of Clouds
Clouds are of different types and they can be classified on the basis of their form and height :
(1) High Clouds (above 6 km)
(2) Middle Clouds (above 3-6 km)
(3) Low clouds (below 3 km)
(4) Multi-layer Clouds (Rainy Clouds)


(1) HIGH CLOUDS

► Cirrus

  •  Indicates fair weather.
Cirro-stratus
  • Produces a halo-like effect
  • They indicate a rainy spell for a short period of time
Cirro-cumulus 
  • Forms the mackered (with spots and rounded patches) sky 
  • They also indicate unsettled weather

(2) MIDDLE CLOUDS

Alto-cumulus
  • These are thick, fluffy, clouds that are a patchy white and grey in colour
  • Indicate fine weather/sunny spells
Alto-stratus
  • Clusters of bluish-grey clouds indicates that there may be rain ahead
  • Associated with the development of bad weather

(3) LOW CLOUDS

Cumulus
  • Also called " WOOL - CLOUDS ".
  • They resembled the head of a Cauliflower.
  • They occur mainly in summer and produced by convection
  • They indicate sunny weather
Stratus
  • Bring dull weather
  • Usually accompanied with a Drizzle 
Strato-cumulus 
  • Indicates fair and clear weather.

(4) MULTI-LAYER CLOUDS

Nimbo-stratus
  • These dark grey, rain or snow bearing clouds cover the sky so completely that one cannot see the sun
  • They indicate a long spell of heavy rain or snow
Cumulo-nimbus
  • These clouds produces lightning, thunder, heavy rain, hail, strong wind and tornadoes
  • The tallest among all clouds.
